about

On "Unfurler", the 4th single on "The Sex Issue" album, Aish Divine explores the difficult subject of abuse. Aish Divine constructs the Unfurler as an abuser who completely unravels what could have been a happy, well-adjusted life. This song is about the long lasting consequences of emotional, physical and racial trauma on self worth and sexuality, it’s about the guilt and confusion that consumes the survivor, and finally, it’s about overcoming the fear and shame of abuse to rebuild a full, well lived life. The song opens with Indian tribal clapping, choruses echo Indian communal village singing, with a heavy chamber music bent with a syncopated marimba and timpani at its core. The video premiering on Oct 28th 9am ET on Youtube, shows Aish Divine's internal emotional struggle, when his own mind's Ego, Id and Superego come alive as three separate characters to both fight and collude with Aish's abuser, the Unfurler.

lyrics

I envy flowers that bloom in spring, my petals were plucked to bloom
I realized my power too soon, I stood here unfurled

I write these words for anyone who struggles with guilt and confusion
Still waiting for your confession, you’ll never find resolution
Someday you’ll know better uh
You’re gonna have to trust yourself
You’re gonna have to love yourself
You’re gonna have to love yourself

I envy this empty canvas, so pure, so blank, ready to be touched
I was born coloured, I never felt complete

Someday I’ll know better uh
I’ll learn not to blame myself
I’ll never betray my child
That day I start to trust me more
That day I start to love me more
That day i start to love you more

I envy these wild giraffes, their necks so noble, held up high in pride
My neck is bent with an irreparable past

Did I participate?
Why did I feel so much shame?

But, unfurler, now I know better
Unfurler, I’m not ashamed
Unfurler, I’m not afraid
As I stand here, rebuilt
